Hovhannes Aivazovsky (Ayvazyan)— A world-renowned Armenian painter who was passionately in love with the sea.
Aivazovsky was born on July 17, 1817 (July 29, New Style) in the city of Theodosia, Crimea. His father was an educated man who called himself "Haivazosky."
Young Aivazovsky's artistic abilities were noticed by the mayor of Theodosia, Kaznacheyev, who helped him enter the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (according to some sources, it was Theodosia's architect, Jacob Christian Koch, who discovered his talent). Aivazovsky graduated with a gold medal. By the age of 25, the young Aivazovsky had already gained world fame.
Although there is no official document confirming Aivazovsky's visit to Armenia, many of his paintings are dedicated to Armenia and Armenians, which speaks for itself. He was the first to paint the Ararat Valley (Painting: Ararat Valley, 1882). Aivazovsky considered Lake Sevan to be Armenia's sea (View of Lake Sevan, 1869).
