Babylonian World Map – One of the Earliest Maps of the World

The Babylonian Map of the World is considered the oldest known world map that has survived to the present day. It is depicted on a clay tablet and offers a fascinating glimpse into how people understood the world more than 2,500 years ago.The front of the design features the original clay tablet, discovered in present-day Iraq during the 19th century and now preserved in the British Museum. The tablet dates back to the 6th century BCE.On the back of the design is a translated version of the map. The Babylonian map portrays the world as a circular landmass surrounded by “bitter waters,” with seven islands beyond its borders. At the center lies Babylon, while surrounding it are the known lands and kingdoms of that era, including the Kingdom of Urartu (present-day Armenia).This map can be regarded as one of the earliest international references to the Armenian state and holds a unique place in the history of ancient cartography.
