Tamzara - Armenian Folk Dance
Tamzara is one of the most dynamic expressions of Armenian folk dance, belonging to the “two steps forward, two steps back” dance family, yet distinguished by its longer structure and powerful rhythmic movement.
Its choreography includes side-to-side steps, double foot strikes, and continuous shifts of body weight from left to right, creating a strong sense of flow and energy.
According to Կոմիտաս, Tamzara is rooted in wedding traditions, where the main roles were performed by the lead dancer (parbash) and the tail dancer (parapoch), with the bride traditionally standing beside her godfather.
Although it has lost its original ritual function over time, Tamzara remains a vivid and powerful representation of Armenian dance heritage.
