Kilikia – The Armenian Sailing

Kilikia – The Armenian Sailing The Kilikia sailing ship was built following the design of medieval Armenian merchant vessels that were widespread during the 13th century. Every detail—from its overall structure to its smallest decorative elements—faithfully recreates the original ships, based on extensive research of historical manuscripts, illustrations, and archaeological sources. Even the crew's clothing was recreated to match the historical period. Measuring 20 meters in length and 5 meters in width, Kilikia set sail on its maiden voyage in May 2004, retracing the historic maritime trade routes of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia. Today, the ship is permanently exhibited on the shores of Lake Sevan. The design features not only the sailing ship itself but also three coats of arms representing the three royal dynasties of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia. The flag flying from the ship depicts the flag of the port city of Korikos, while the star-shaped symbol resembling a compass is the historic Wind Rose (Վարդ հողմոց), indicating the directions of the winds on the horizon. The concept of this design was developed in consultation with Captain Karen Balayan, the leader of the Kilikia expedition.
